Zane House, St Owen Street,
Wine Bar & Bistro
We ended up here one night by chance: there are literally no decent restaurants left in Hereford for people who don't have a child under 5. On several occasions we had visited Zane when it was known as Charlotte's Bar, and had not bothered since. However the need for food and a decent cocktail drew us in. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, however that which was warm to begin with soon became stifling hot. There was also the awkward moment when we walked in and realised that we were the only people in the rather large space. The waitress however put us at ease and ordered our drinks. The taste of the cocktails was satisfactory however for the price the size and presentation was not. As a vegetarian myself I found the menu to be limited. I chose a roasted vegetable dish with goats cheese. My two companions chose the Monkfish and a chicken dish. After ordering my Chicken friend noticed a 'Specials Board' had not been pointed out to us previously- Chicken Friend changed her mind but we couldn't locate the waitress to tell her. My main course was exceptionally large, somewhat oily and had an unexpected heat to it. The goats cheese was however perfectly cooked. The chicken was somewhat small, however chicken friend claimed that it was lovely. Monk-fish' dish was beautifully presented, unfortunately the fish was watery and bland. Despite our expanding stomachs Chicken Friend and I decided to have pudding. My trio of sorbets was beautiful and her lemon tart lovely- if a bit hard: it jerked around the plate as she tried to cut it. As we left the restaurant was bursting at the seams. I will return, at a later time (it seems no one eats before 10 here) and if they improve the cocktail menu.
